ශ්රී ලංකාව ආසියාවේ ආශ්චර්ය කරා යන ගමනට යෝධ ශක්තියක් වෙමින් "සේද මාවතේ රන්දොටුව" කොළඹ දකුණ වරායේ නව දියකඩනය සහ පළමු පර්යන්තය ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් අද ජාතියට විවෘත විය.නව වරාය විවෘත කිරීම සනිටුහන් කරමින් ප‍්‍රංශයට අයත් පෙගාසස් නෞකාව වරායට පැමිණ ඇති අතර එය ශ්රී ලංකාවට ඉතිහාසයේ පැමිණි විශාලතම නෞකාව ලෙස සැලකේ.බහාලූම් මෙහෙයුම් කටයුතු සඳහා සියළු නවීන යන්ත්‍රෝපකරණවලින් සමන්විත මෙම වරාය ඉදිරිකරීම සඳහා ඇමරිකානු ඩොලර් මිලියන 400ක් වැය කර ඇත.
බහාලූම් 10000 සිට 25000ක් රැගත් ලොව විශාලතම නෞකාවලට පවා ඇතුළුවිය හැකි ලෙස නව වරාය ඉදි කර තිබේ.
ශ්රී ලංකාව ආසියාවේ නාවික කේනද්‍රස්ථානය බවට පත්කිරීමේ සිහිනය සැබෑ කරන්නක් වන මෙය පසුගිය 2005 වසරේ අත්සන් කළ ගිවිසුමකට අනුව ක්‍රියාත්මක කර තිබෙන අතර සමස්ත ව්‍යාපෘතිය වෙනුවෙන් වැය කෙරෙන මුදල අමෙරිකානු ඩොලර් මිලියන 1,000 කි.
පසුගිය 2011 වසරේ දෙසැම්බර් මස 16 දා ඇරැඹි වරාය පුළුල් කිරීමේ ව්‍යාපෘතියත් සමඟ කොළඹ වරාය ලොව විශාලතම බහාලුම් නෞකාව හැසිරවිය හැකි නව මෙහෙයුම් මැදිරියකින්ද සමන්විත වන අතර ආනයන හා අපනයන ක්‍රියාවලිය ශක්තිමත් කිරීමට ද මේ මඟින් හැකිවන බව රජය පවසයි.
මේ දැවැන්ත ව්‍යාපෘතිය සාර්ථකව ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමත් සමඟ බිහිවන සෘජු හා වක්‍ර රැකියා ගණන 25,000 ක් පමණ වෙයි. ශ්රී ලංකා ආර්ථිකයට සක්‍රිය දායකත්වයක් ලබාදෙන කොළඹ දකුණු වරාය සමස්ත ව්‍යාපෘතිය 2016 වනවිට අවසන් කිරීමට නියමිතය.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open the 1st phase of the Colombo South Port which is the first phase of the 500-million-dollar Colombo Port Expansion Project.
Port Authority sources said that a 12,000 TEU container vessel, the biggest boxship ever to call a Sri Lankan harbour, will enter the Colombo Port today to mark the opening of the first phase of the 500-million-dollar Colombo Port Expansion Project.
They said that the massive new South Port of Colombo, located mid-way on the lucrative east-west sea route has world class facilities and with its 18-metre draft, can handle even the biggest Triple-E Class vessels carrying 18,000 containers that are already in service.
The China Merchant Holdings International, which is a Chinese government owned company built the Colombo South Port on a BOT basis and with 85% of the investment by CICT and the remaining 15% by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
Shipping sources said that the new port offers numerous advantages to both the shipper and the vessel operators, and the vessels could refuel at this port and use the space/weight to carry more cargo. They said that the new South Port is the only harbor in South Asia that can accommodate the Triple-E Class vessels and as such it could become a major transshipment hub competing with Dubai and Singapore.(niz)
